And Kern County dominated in more ways than just at the top. Stockdale's Alex Collatz capped a remarkable weekend by medaling in both throwing events, second in the discus (163-1) and sixth in the shot put (42-6), an event she only started a month ago.
ReplyDeleteThis after Collatz set a personal record by nearly 12 feet and led the discus after a 177-0 in the preliminaries — a national sophomore record and the second-ranking mark in the nation this year.
"Yesterday was the throw of the season for me," Collatz said. "I just wanted to get close to that rather than go for the big one all the time. I got second, and that's the place I wanted to finish in."
Anna Jelmini of Shafter, the national leader and second farthest thrower all-time with a best of 54-4 ¾, fouled her first throw but her second effort of 48-11 ½, was good enough for the win and five feet farther then the next best Californian. Jelmini used her last four throw in a attempt to better the national record of 54-10 3/4 set by Michelle Carter of Red Oak (Tx.) in 2003. The result was three fouls and a final fair put of 50-5 ¾. The first throw of 45-7 ¾ Jackie Alhoo of Stockton St. Mary’s was good enough for second. Junior Jasmine Burrell of North Torrance had a personal best of 45-1 /4 on her first effort to finish third. Kayla Kovar of Ridgecrest Burroughs was fourth with her second-round throw of 43-1 ¼ and Teresa Loya of Santa Maria St. Joseph was fifth with her third round throw of 43-0 ¼.
