Mustangs Remain Undefeated

As expected the Mustangs took the team wins today against both North and Centennial. Both the boys and girls dominated each race by taking the lead with a pack of runners and never looked back. The boys went one through five in their race and the girls were almost as dominate.

Blair Sloan won the boy's race and Riddhi Patel won the girl's race in leading their teams to wins.

Next week will be the race when Stockdale takes on Ridgeview in a battle of the undefeated in SWYL dual meet action.

Stockdale Boys Win at Woodward!

Clovis West Golden Eagle Invite
Woodward Park - Fresno, CA
Friday, September 25th

The Mustangs continued their winning ways with a nice team win at Woodward Park (which is the home of valley and state). Like the weather in Bakersfield, I hear it was in triple digits in Fresno too.

This time around Kelly took the win and lead his team to a good early season clocking of 88:17 which is 17:40 per man. The varsity girls took third, JV boys won and the frosh/soph girls won too!

Girls take 11th in Division Two Race at Woodbridge

The Stockdale girls ran 1:37:50 with a 1:10 spread between their first girl and their fifth. So they average 19:34 per runner on the three mile course. When one merges all the races, their team time would of ranked them 68th out of the 172 teams that competed that day.

The Mustangs Win Against Frontier

Coming off their team and overall individual win at the EB Invite, both Stockdale squads had an easy time with the Titans. Blair Slaton (photo) won his second meet of the year in a another time of sub sixteen and lead his to a nice score of 15.

In XC, the lowest score a team can get is 15 and a score of 15 to 50 is like a no-hitter in baseball. Only Urmston of Frontier kept it from being a no-hitter (One school has all seven athletes finish before the other school's first athlete) with his 7th place finish. So Stockdale had to settle for a shutout with a score of 15 to 47.

Lady Mustangs are Ranked 5th in Division One

Last year, Courtney Moore (Sr 20:59) lead her squad to a 7th place finish at valley. She has graduated but the rest of her team did not. For more then a decade, Stockdale has had to battle Centennial for bragging rights in the SWYL but last season Ridgeview defeated Centennial in a dual for the first time in Centennial's school history.

This fall the battle for the SWYL should be between Stockdale and Ridgeview (D3 Valley Champs in 2008) with Centennial looking to improve from last year.

6 ( 54) Lauren Schultz So 911 54 22:37
7 ( 56) Delilah Diaz Fr 909 56 22:55

One team that will definitely improve over their 2008 valley performance is the Drillers. BHS had four really good runners and went undefeated in duals but in large field meets, not having a fifth really hurt them. At valley, they sat out two of their top runners due to injuries. All four girls return this season and if they find a fifth, they should be able defend their SEYL title.

Mustangs are Ranked 4th in Division 1

With Blair Slaton (photo), Stephen Burke (Jr) and Curtis Kelly (So) leading the way, Stockdale is the top ranked division one team from Kern County. The teams in front of them are really good, so their chances of making the top three at valley and moving on to state our slim.

But they should give Ridgeview a run for it's money in the SWYL if they find an athlete or two. Last season, Curtis was the second fastest freshman in the valley on the Woodward course (16:32 for the 5k).

Rounding out the top ten are Centennial (9) and Bakersfield (10). With Drillers entire varsity squad graduating, it is doubtful that they will be staying in the top ten. Speaking of the Drillers, Centennial's new coach is former Driller great Vondre Armour (state 800 champ) who hopes to lead the Golden Hawks to success this year.

Haney Top Returnee

After a good track season, Haney (photo) will lead a deep team into this season. Only one runner graduated from their valley squad and Mustangs could give Ridgeview a run for its money.

A 21:29 average is good especially when your top girl only ran 20:59. Stockdale usually has large squads and they can only get better. Unfornately for them, they have been stuck in division one and have little chance of making state. So getting a SWYL title would be the highlight for their season.

Traveling Teen Gets Two Seconds

After a very successful freshmen year, Stockdale's Curtis Kelly left Hawaii to compete at the California State Games this weekend and came in second in the 1500 in a time of 4:23. He also came in second in the 3000 in a time of 9:40 according to his mom. They reported that it was nice to run against new faces.

Collatz second at World Youth event

SUDTIROL, Italy -- Stockdale's Alex Collatz was second in the girls discus in May at the Central Section track and field championships and second last month at the CIF state meet.

Now she's second in the world.

Collatz tossed her second throw 50.09 meters (164 feet, 4 inches) Saturday in the girls discus finals at the IAAF World Youth Championships. That was good for a silver medal, nearly a full meter better than third-place Shanice Craft of Germany.

China's Shanshan Li won the gold medal with a 51.65-meter (169-5). Collatz has one throw better than that in her career, a 177-0 at the state meet in Clovis.

Li threw her 51.65 on her first attempt, then added four other throws above 50 meters. Collatz's next-best attempt was a 49.41 (162-1) on her fifth attempt. She fouled on her sixth and final throw.

Collatz was second at both the section and state meets to Shafter's Anna Jelmini, who holds the national high school record in the event. Jelmini, 18, is too old to compete in the youth championships; competitors must turn 16 or 17 during 2009.

Stockdale Girls Best was a 21:29 Average at Valley 08

107:24 was the second best Kern County team time on the Woodward course. Thoough almost 5 minutes slower then Ridgeview, Stockdale is returning all their varsity runners but one. Ridgeview has three really good runners but as everyone knows, in big meets you need five to excel. Stockdale has large squads and fields good teams year after year but has the misfortune of running in the SWYL were they use to be the bridesmaid behind Centennial and now Ridgeview.

Interestingly, over the past few years, the Mustangs have had good large cross country teams but few seem to run track. I assume they must be swimmers. Haney ran well this past track season and should be their leader.

Collatz claims national discus gold medal

Anna Jelmini's not the only one around here who can throw her way into world competition.

Stockdale High's Alex Collatz and Shafter's Lacie Rasley each won a throwing event at the USA Track & Field Youth Championships this week and advance to compete at the IAAF World Youth Championships next week in Bressanone, Italy.

The events are for 16- and 17-year olds. Both Collatz and Rasley were sophomores last year.

Collatz threw 152 feet in the discus Tuesday at the USATF event in Ypsilanti, Mich., not close to her personal best of 177-0 but enough to out-distance her nearest competition by more than five feet.

Then on Wednesday, Rasley put the shot 43-9.25 to beat Sarah Howard of Dublin, Ga., by 12.25 inches. Rasley's personal best is 44-0.25.

The top two finishers in each event were up for consideration to attend the world youth games, and USATF selected Collatz and Rasley.

Shafter High's Jelmini competed in the discus in Poland last year as part of the USATF World Junior Championships team, one age group up from Youth.

Stockdale has a good trio of runners who have all been successful since their freshman years. Perhaps the most successful was Curtis Kelly, who posted the second best central valley freshman time on the Woodward course last year. He also broke ten in the 3200 and ran in the valley meet in thaqt event where only the top four in Bakersfield move on. Stephen Burke and Blair Slaton also ran some quick time in the shorter races in track as well. Last year, Stockdale had a large squad and cross country is a numbers game.
